Picture below shows some of the remnants of green we found all over. (Photo; Robert Courtenay,
www.jitterjunction.com). Of course, this does not prove the absence of a previous color. I suppose it's possible that both Whitcomb and Davenport delivered their locomotives in basic gray primer for the purchasing railroads to paint as they liked. The testimony of old hands who were there is difficult to refute. It's one of those things we'll probably never know for sure, Unless maybe if M.H. Farrell someday makes public his collection of SVRy memorabilia and an old paint shop order turns up. (And nobody but a bunch of die-hard railroad buffs like ourselves would ever give a durn about).
I did, in fact, consult the SVRR board of directors about the color during the restoration. Their response was "paint it any way you think appropriate as long as it's not the infamous 'Sumpter Valley salmon pink'".
I would echo that response to the owners. For what it's worth I think the grey and black scheme on the #110 looks pretty sharp, and I know Taylor and others have some heartburn about the color of #100.
Paint or repaint it any way you want but please, guys, not pink!
