First, I appreciate all the work you did on this unit. It really turned out great! You all are to be commended.
On the color, I have two reasons to be fairly sure it was Grey on the SVRy.
First, the old-timers that George Hardy talked to all said #100 was grey as was the #101 when she showed up. That is consistant with the info I got from the old timers I have talked to.
Second, look at the photo of mine that Bret posted of her with factory lettering in profile.
If you took that shot in black & white of her in a dark green paint like you have on her today, it would show as a black engine.
Look at the builders plate on my old shot and compare how dramatically it stands out on that photo from how the plates look today on the dark green background. Also, if the lettering was red on that dark green it would not show as much of a contrast as it does on my old photo.
I am quite confident that the grey color is correct.
Look what happens if I convert one of my color shot of her in green to Black & White.
