Besides a lens hood, keeping the lens cap on when not in use is a good thing also.
My old Pentax 6x7 has a few dings on the ring of the lens, but its fine otherwise.
Most of my use is on video in the last 20 years, and I can attest to the fact that a lens hood and cap saves the lens on several occassions.
However, dropping a camera in the snow on a mountainside between Hamiltons Point and Coxo in 1993 didn't help the chip block very much!!!

Bad news was all the video was red after that. The other bad news is that it was a $5,000 replacement part from Sony. Good news was it was the only thing that had a two year warranty, and there was 5 months left on it. I still had to pay $500 for labor! Win some-lose some!!!
