Later tonight, I'll post a longer history of #5. For now, here is the essense: Jay Conde, author of "Sugar Trains Pictorial", brought me a copy of the Baldwin's builder's photo of boiler #58686, a 2-4-2 built for the Hawaii Railway Company in 1924. He asked if I would like to purchase it, and restore it. The little locomotive was beautiful. I purchased it from the Dillingham Corporation for one dollar.
With great help from friends, for the next five years, we did restore the locomotive to operating condition. It ran at the "Tahoe, Trout Creek, & Pacific Railroad" in 1970 and 1971. When that project turned out to be hopeless, we moved the locomotive to Chama, for safe storage.
I do talk frequently to Dr. Richard May, the present owner of the locomotive. He and I disagree on some aspects of the restoration, but I think we remain friends.
