Interestingly, Kahului !2 was also a shortlived locomotive in Chama. It was property of Scenic Rys and was stored in a dismantled state in Chama for years departing in about 1982. The Midwest Central in Mt. Pleasant, IA bought it. A new boiler was made by an outfit in Durango (they also built the tender tank for 488 and 476). Midwest Central added the cross compound airpump. Partway through its restoration it was sold the Silverwood outfit in Idaho. MCRR finished the work and sent it off. I assume it is still there (??).
According to legend, Hawaii #5 steamed once in Chama. The air pump wouldn't work so it had to be handbraked to a stop. I understand it managed to haul 0503 to the narrows and back. #5 got a brief bit of glory when it got used in a scene of the increadibly bad movie "Legend Of the Lone Ranger". Filmed in 1980. In that scene it was shoved by an off-camera locomotive.
