Rick, Derrell and other time travelers of the C&S...
Tourists? I thought we were undertaking a historical recreation of freight operations…circa 1937... LOL...OK so there will have to be some compromises made for people movers, ADA etc. etc. My vision was that our C&S freight cars would do double duty with minimal compromises for their "dual" revenue purposes.
Rick, I think C&S passenger excursion cars would be a perfect car for this operation and Steve Torrico has already suggested as much, but let’s work the freight angle a little more in this thread please...
Derrell, please check your notes, St. Charles gondola # 4228 still listed circa 1938...so maybe we can have one St. Charles car in our train, please....
Now to the practicalities of using the type 2 and 3 gon’s for both passenger and freight, my thoughts are: The end boards would have to be set up so that they were removable to allow passengers to move car to car (just like the D&RGW drop gons that Jason converted that are being used now) just make the ends replaceable for "freight" use. The second option is to have a side dump door version 2000 series?? and people exit and enter from one of the sides (hinge the door from the floor rather than the top of the side and we have created a potential wheel chair ramp for ADA access (approx. 51" clear width between the stakes, 65" width at the car center point with 35" loading height from the rail head to the floor; type 2).
OK mull this over and/or shoot it full of holes or propose a better idea while I figure out where we are going to get some ASF bolsters...just wishing I could magically scale up some of Darrell’s old 1:48 versions to full size...
Incidentally guys, this all needs to happen ASAP so that next year we can turn back our time clock 70 years and everything will be in place for our C&S freight train circa 1937 to be ready to roll...
We will know it can happen when John Craft puts it on his calendar so a tentative date might be Monday October 1, 2007 along with the previously scheduled return of the D&RGW "San Juan" for 8AM Tuesday Feb. 1, 2011....
