Gentlemen,
At the time of the 1919 valuation, the 420 was on the RGS, but thanks to "D&RGW Archives" we have the D&RGW inspection inventory. None of the C-17 needed new boilers up to that time as in fair or good condition. Exam: #419 at Chama fair, last major rebuild 6/1918; #421 at Salida fair last rebuild 3/1917. Maybe the inventory records are around for Ridgway.
Now if fans want to dream, #42 Baldwin #8626 was the next engine built to the same Baldwin plan class as Rio Grande & Pagosa Spring #32 of New Mexico Lumber Co. fame. I am not sure what exact differences there are between them that could not be disguised. Now to really do damage in this wire, the Unitah #12 now unwanted (?) in Boulder City, NV, was the prior construction mate by same class and plan to Silverton Northern #4. This needs more study to see if they were the same as many years different in construction. Baldwin records are at Harrisburg, PA in State Archives.
Now that would be a site, though there are good ones now, of RG&PS #32 and SN #4 double heading with gusto through Elk Park. Dream on!
I can supply reboiler dates to anyone in need.
