I think this is just a pipe dream. Even if you achieved 'San Juan' times this would be really dificult to do. Plus you have the problem that people just aren't going to flock to Chama and Antonito, particularly to board a really early train. The best ridership you can hope to achieve is in the 70 thousand bracket. That has actually been achieved in the past, but not much more than that and they had 5 or 6 engines in service then and gasoline was less that a dollar a gallon. No one wants to be on that second train that would not return until almost dark. The best time I can find for the San Juan is around 3 1/2 hours from Antonito to Chama. With freight car based passenger cars it's more like 4 to 5 hours and with a lunch stop it's now 6. Isn't that pretty close to their basic schedule now? The trains would have to be turned and serviced as would the locomotives. It would really put a strain on operations and crews. They might try and do this on weekends only and during the summer rush when there is plenty of daylight. Personally, I think the benefit of better track is just s smoother ride and better timekeeping and less derailments.
