One must be careful here. As good as it is, Glover and Wilson's book only covers one part of the equation. I go back to my original contention that the major thrust for saving the C&TS was economic and only anecdotally historical. The cake is the railroad. The historical aspects are the icing. I'm conjecturing here, but the railroad could perhaps survive on its own, and ignore the historical aspects, but it could not survive on history alone. Conceivably all of the equipment could be concentrated in Chama and Antonito and turned into a static museum. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figger out how long that would last.
