Alas, the 3450 was allowed to go downhill quickly after Wardale left and was, as you remarked, soon running with the worst of them. Most of Wardale's modifications were removed, starting with the GPCS (the gas producer combustion system) which was too complicated for most of the firemen to understand.
Yes, it was reclassified a Class 26NC to note the modifications. The NC was for non-condensing. The 3450 had its condenser removed by Wardale and he used the space to install the Lempor Exhaust and Kordina blast pipe arrangement.
But it was a great loco while it was being maintained!
