There are also several books by Dusty and Charlie Lewis. I met Charlie Lewis and his son one day on the George-Knysna line at the Kaimans River Bridge. A really nice guy. Anyway the book I am thinking about shows a simultaineous departure of two steam passenger trains from I think Kimberly station on the cover.
My brother met Dusty a few times as well as Charlie as my brother made it to SA more than my two visits. When he was there he got doubleheaded Garratts on the Petermaritzburg line for example. This was around 1980.
South Africa was like a step-back in time for Americans who remembered any regular steam in the US. 1984 was like 1954 in the US to some degree.
1980 was like 1950 with even more steam around.
Nothing beats the experience of seeing regular steam operations, and I only regret that a lot of younger readers may never get to experience that.

PS It was a photographers paradise for lighting also. In July for example, it was their peak winter month, and on the Karoo,(desert), it would get cold at night, and you might have frost in the morning and warming to about 50 degrees during the day. We had one day of clouds out of the 30 we spent each trip, so nearly every day was cold and clear, which of course was great for steam!
