Kevin's dad, John, here.
For any who aren't familiar with South African steam power I can't "over-urge" purchase of one or more videos. I have a number and they are among my most favorite.
There can be no question that these Class 25 engines are fully the equal, size-for-size, of any American 4-8-4, which is demonstrated innumerable times across the videos I have. Their performance was unbelievable and they had a sound to match.
Fortunately a number exist and while I'm not intimately familiar with present SAR steam operations I do believe one or more operates in "prestige" service on occasion.
SAR had a large fleet of fine 4-8-2 and other power, and also a group of small 2-8-4's. They also had a number of engines which utilized Vanderbilt tenders and Buckeye trucks! Their power was maintained exceedingly well, too.
Another amazing element of the video is the condition of the roadbed. Swaying or bucking is rarely seen at all.
