Haw ,haw ,the practicality of some of the ideas are laughable ,especially the underpasses ,that would certainly ice up . It would work well somewhere besides snow country . zThe need for a restored depot at Cumbres mystifies me ,as the section house has seen very little use since the purchase in 1970 . A fountain in Antonito ? The town used to complain we used too much of their water when we would run a garden hose in the tender overnight . Accomdations in lonely ,windswept Osier ? Call it the "Overlook" and film the third version of "The Shining' there ! "Heeers Johnnnny!" Of course ,some of the ideas ,like a new depot and expanding parking on the other side of the yard were good .An office building is still needed . Scenic became more practical over the years ,and to Bob Keller's everlasting credit he lobbied for a "real' depot ,as opposed to the gosh-awful but politically correct one-story "ski lodge" design the architect came up with . The camper park was needed at Chama ,but Patterson basically took care of that with his beautiful and well-maintained park north of the yard . Of all of the often simple but handsome depots on the Rio Grande system , the one in Chama is the homeliest I have ever seen . It would help if the ornamental truss on either end that was taken off in the 1940s was replaced .
All in all ,it was a well-executed plan that served as a basis for future improvements ,and to Leo's credit ,he made a lot of it happen. The document issomewhat poigniant in that the optimistic projections for growth have yet to be realized . E-mail me sometime ,Earl .
