My grandfather told me he and buddies used to walk along the SP tracks in San Francisco and pick up pieces of coal to take home so the families had fuel to keep warm and cook food. He had an extraordinary memory and said it was 1903 - 1906. The 1906 earthquake sent his family to Oakland for good and got him out of the coal "business".
