Sam; There is water close to Antonito. Just a little south is the Rio De laPinos and 5 miles west there are two or three campgrounds on the Conejos river.
We camped at Magote Meadows right on the river bank. Pretty place, but the mosquitos were bad
in the evenings.
At the time we were there they were working up
a program to have a Forest Service Volunteer ride the train and help entertain the passengers by
supplying information about the vegetation and
history of the area. If I remember correctly, that program was handled by the Forest Service Conejos District and ended about 1994 or '95
due to lack of funding.
The intent of the program was to help increase ridership from the Antonito end and having had several years experience as a FS Volunteer and having ridden the NG numerous times,I had
high hopes of qualifying for this job. Wouldn't that be a tough job ? Ride the train every day and talk to the passengers !!
Jim.
