I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but if the proportioning if off on the gauge, and you reset the needle to be correct at mid scale, the needle will either not point to zero but rather be off the peg a little, or may have so much tension against the peg that it tends to loosen itself and turn on the shaft if it is not pushed on hard enough. There is a lever or link between the bourdon tube and the gear rack that on the gauges I have worked with has an ajustable connection at one end so you can vary the amount of movement of the gear rack with respect to the movement of the end of the bourdon tube. I played with one last year that was off a bit. It is a lot of trial and error because each time to check it rquires replacement of the dial and the needle.
