Steam gauge question-experts please.

I aquired a beautiful American steam locomotve gauge for #315 from the widow of Mike Nemecek. I tested it today. It looks like it was 2.5 to 3.5 pounds off in its reading. Is that "in the zone" or does it need rebuilding? How do you service such a gauge ? Do you oil it, clean it or what? I heard you do not oil its parts. I am of the school "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
