Having more work to do at Osier is music to the Sqare Nail Gang's ears! We really believe that there should be more interpretational things for the lunch crowd to see.
The turntable was removed in the 20's because it was too small. The problem with building anything new at Osier is that there is no more level ground. The small station was a real operators office and residence for many years. You could even buy tickets there. The CATS turned it into restrooms in the late 70's, destroying practically all of the interior.
I understand that the loop was put in more for safety and convienence than anything. Whenever you need to do an "Osier turn" the engine would have to run backwards one trip between Cumbres/Osier or Bighorn/Osier. All the moonlight charters had this problem. And if an engine had to return to Chama for repairs, lets say, then it was not the easiest thing. The loop was thought of as a better option than a wye. I think another turntable is out of the question - too much maintenance.
Here is a picture of downtown Osier in 1924. The RR buildings were behind these. That's Osier Mt. in the distance. The buildings were all frame (the tents were only there during construction). They sort of remind me of the old buildings at Cumbres (also now gone). A family named Jenkins owned most of the land.
