Greg, you would have enjoyed what Bud and I went through recording the first "Governor's Special" on the C&TS in early 1971, I believe. We had an Ampex AG-440-4 studio machine which used 1/2" tape in one of the first boxcars the C&TS converted. The box that housed the batteries was nearly as big. As I remember we recorded some of the sounds of the wheels on the rails by suspending a pair of old Altec "saltshaker" mics a few inches above the rail. The sound was great! We also had a pair of AKG condensor mics on the top front corners of the boxcar. Most of those tracks are on Volume 4 of "The Rattle and the Roar".
I've been trying to run down the masters of all of this stuff with no success. I think Bud's son, Raymond Edmonds, has them, but I've not been able to locate him. As I mentioned on another post, Jay Wimer over at the Goat mentioned he had some plans to re-release the series, but I don't know what has transpired with that project. It would be nice to have the series remastered and available on CD. There were some pretty historic recordings, including a short track of the last whistle of Midland Terminal engine #60 on the last train on the MT on 20 February 1949.
