O.Winston Link's photography plainly transcended the railfan genre. It is recognized by art critics as some of the 20th Century's finest photography and prints sell in the best photo galleries from Santa Fe to Soho. Link was a professional photographer all the way, using sophisticated equipment, imaginitive poses, careful planning of each shot, and world class darkroom developing, when most rail photographers we are familiar with were doing it in their closets and basements. There were many other fine photographers of trains, of course . My personal favorite is Richard B.Jackson, who caught the spirit of Colorado Narrow Gauge. James Moreley took very atmospheric photos of the SPng and V&T ,and the lonliness of the land these desert roads ran through is palpable . Charles Clegg knew how to extract the charm of the shortline. Richard Steinheimer knew how to picture the angularity and lyric of railroading. One thing these photographers had in common...they lookeed for more than your stock 3/4 view.
