Casey: Speaking of interesting artifacts turning up, we ran into one of #3's original head lights yesterday. I was up on top of the trusses doing wiring in the car shop and there it was tucked away. There has been one kicking around that was muchly rusted out, that I guess had been on the rear, but this one is in pretty good shape, but in pieces and presumably had been on the front. Definetly repairable. It is missing the reflector lens and burner. The one that is on #3 was built by Nils Christianson. It is a very faithful replica of this one. Maybe this one when restored can go on the rear to replace the butt ugly EMD light.
This morning I had a birthday present in the mail which was several SVRy photos that I think you will find interesting. One of them is of Baldwin Mogul #1 coupled to Tool and outfit car 072. I can't guess the location, but it could be on a wye. The outfit car has marker lamps on it, but they are on the end next to the tender, which makes me think they are doing a switching move. It is a good photo of the car which is essentially a side door caboose without cupola. It does have small end platforms. The car rosters indicate it was built by SVRy sometime prior to the valuation report in 1916 and was retired 10-1-43. I suspect that this car must have been part of their regularwrecker consist as the wrecking crane was 070 and it's tenderand tool car was 071. Another feature of the photos is that it must have been taken after rerailing the engine's tender. The firemans side of the tender looks scuffed up and there are large clumps of sod and grass hanging from the wood rack and other points like it went over somewhere and slid along the ground on that side. The engine however which is under steam looks unscathed. I am thinking broken drawbar perhaps?
One other detail that I had not seen in other photos was that #1 (2nd) had a pilot flanger.
Regards.
