Regardless of who is trying to push the RR out, the real point that has to be hung onto is the staggering cost to put something like a RR back into place once it is gone. Having that physical plant there is half the battle won. Once you pull up the track, things are close to hopeless. Building a bicycle trail requires almost zero engineering by comparison. I am a hardcore rider. Bicycle trails are nice, but really, does the world really need to rip up more existing (and semi-irreplaceable) track to put in yet one more bicycle trail?
