The boiler appeared to be quite sound. The firebox looks brand new. We pulled a few tubes out of the bottom of the firebox to replace them. The DRGW never capped the stack in Chama and the bottom row of flues was burried in the soot and cinders. Water had gotten in and corroded the ends of the tubes off back into the front sheet. They had not leaked and OM had been sucsessfully run in 1974,75 & 76 with no problems. But we thought it would be a good idea to change them out.
OM has a cool old wagon top boiler. It looks like it could have come from a 4-4-0. But of course it was built for OM in 1889.
