PRSL,
I was there that day working my butt off with several others to replace that bearing. If you look at the photo on the bottom of page 122 of the Colorado Rail Annual #9, you will see me in the black cowboy hat by the trailing truck with my hand on the jack handle. To my right, IIRC, is Ernie Robarts and in front of me is Bob Eveleth. John Ross' posterior is quite evident bent over the journal of the rear truck on the tender. My question to you is, where were you in the photo, and why did you wait so long to get involved?
After it was pointed out to us how the equalizers worked, we placed a jack under both sides of the truck frame and replaced the bearing in no time. IIRC, there was no need to place wedges in the springs.
