My observation of the wrecking blocks and tools on the tender on my last ride on C&TS.
A pile of wrecking block of wood was on the top of the tender. Some were solid but many were broken and split from various usage. And there were some scrap tie plates with them. There were definite indications that plates were used for rerailing work. The use of any loose metal during any rerailing operation is a strict safety violation and a sure way to get someone hurt.
Suggestion: Have a strict rule against using any metal during rerailing. A rerail frog must be spiked down or secured in some way for it to be used.
Have a complete set of unused OAK blocks and wedges always ready and dispose of any that are used. This is the safest way for quickest rerailments that will pay many times over. Give the crew the tools they need. The lumberyard will love you but it is sure cheaper than anyone getting hurt.
