It is my understanding the the traditional speed recorders used in railroad locomotives are of the chart recorder variety which make a permanent record of the locomotive speed versus time on a strip of chart paper. They are also quite expensive which is why they were dismissed for use on the C&TSRR locomotives.
The bike speedos are quite cheap and easy to install which is why I thought they would do the job.
