The speed of trains is crucial to the operation of any railroad, mainline or tourist. If one does not know the speed at which one's train is traveling, how could he obey slow orders and posted speed restrictions? An inexpensive speedometer is one solution. But, given the slower speeds at which they travel(5-20 MPH), any narrow gauge engineer worth a darn should be able to estimate his speed within 1 MPH at any given time. Just my 2 cents, thanks for listening.
