The reefer may have also been used because there was one in Durango that had been set up for LCL freight in the San Juan. It had leaf springs and I think a modified air system. I could be wrong about the air though. If I remember right the interior had been modified to handle the freight instead of frozen products. The Grande used a reefer because it was bigger the the box cars, 40' v. 30' for a similar width. There is a good picture on p.43 & 44 of the "Narrow Gauge Pictorial" vol. IV, the car number is 160, also on the link I posted.
