Why were reefers used in LTL traffic instead of a straight boxcar? Was this because there was occasional iced traffic, or just because they were tighter and cleaner?
Even when you realize cars have an A and a B end, it's interesting to think about an RPO/baggage combine car running "backwards". It certainly makes sense for a combine, since you want the passageway clear through the train, but in this day of push-pull commuters, it just seems odd!
Did anybody in the old days actually care if an RPO or baggage car was turned the 'wrong' way in a consist? Why would it matter?
