Greg:
Since there's at least a year or so till 463 comes back to life there's a little time to pre-arrange a San Juan trainset for a time-shared K-27/K-28 doubleheader.
There are a handful of sickly M-O-W ex-passenger cars in the Chama yard. Using these, it seems like you could work to put together some kind of short San Juan look-alike with a little paint, spit, and a lot of refurbishing. After all the Friends projects to rebuild frames on freight cars in the last few years, maybe they could use that expertise to focus on mechanical rebuilds of the existing M-O-W cars. Looking at the C&TS Rolling Stock Roster on the Friends site, the railroad has at least the following:
X54 former RPO ran in 1988?
X65 former RPO ran in 1988?
053 former RPO
0292 former coach
0452 to-be business car?
With a few of the series II coaches that at least have a vaguely similar profile, I think you could repaint X54 or X65 as an RPO, spend a bunch of time on 292 and 452 in the new Friends car shop to work and at least from the outside I think you could put together a five or six car San Juan train, couldn't you?
Since the Rotaries don't run and won't run for awhile, the X54 and X65 cars seem like useful candidates for "observable" San Juan cars (even if they aren't suitable for passengers)
In any case, It seems like there are enough bits to put together a visibly similar San Juan (even if they ran on freight trucks
" />. Plus, you could probably arrange to rent/borrow a couple of authentic cars from the D&S for a month or so if you were persuasive!
