The only occasion I have ever operated a steam locomotive was #346 at the Colorado Railroad Museum. This used to be a small "reward" to the volunteers who worked on various projects.
It was a real kick to do it, and I'll never forget that day. I could have done it several more times, but I didn't want to be a hog about it. I don't know if this program is still in force today. It was actually better than being "paid" money, which I never would have taken from the museum. Just abiout everyone else felt the same way.
