Bob,
I suggested a similar idea to George B the one time we met in 1997, and earlier this year suggested this to one of the board members. I think the problem this year has been lack of engines, and other more pressing concerns in this the first year of new management. Also I do not know about insurance which could be a big concern.
I know the folks in Michigan do this with their Engineer for an Hour Program with 2-8-4 #1225.
What I would propose would be to have 2 or three sessions per year, and have group classes or whatever is required. Then dedicate an engine for the entire day, and run a REAL train(no revenue passengers though)from say Antonito to Osier and back, or some other scenario. I think this would be good use of some freight cars not pulling needed coaches away from the daily operations. You could have two prices, one for fireman and one for engineer. And yes, the idea of videotaping was part of my plan. Each guy could run for perhaps an hour at a time, stop and change crews so everyone gets their turn.
I think this is something for the future, after they catch their breath from 2000.
Sincerely,
Greg Scholl
