Jeff,
After all the criticism, advice, and observations on 191 there are a couple of things that Dan and others don't realize about the the CRRM. There are over 100 pieces of equipment on only 14 acres. Only a few pieces are under cover. The UV at 5,000+ feet wreaks havoc with both metal and wood equipment requiring repainting ever few years. Add in the rusting and wood breakdown. There is no more room to add more cover for the equipment. There is a program in place to maintain all of this equipment. This has bordered on the heroic lately. The current staff and volunteers cannot do all this by themselves. Thanks to grants, contributions, and programs some of the equipment work can be outsourced. Forget about returning 191 to operation. It has been maintained over the years. I helped with the frame and tank 40 years ago. Sure it needs more work, but that is on the schedule. Over the years a lot has been done to 191, not mentioned were a new wood pilot and the fabrication of rock guards on the pilot. It has not been neglected. A lot has been accomplished at the CRRM and you and the crew have worked wonders in the last few years. How about restoring and operating three steam locomotives? Paul Hammond and the Board have put the Museum on the right track.
