The photo of #5 in Best’s Central American Holiday appears to show a front knuckle coupler. (Maybe I’m not seeing it correctly) It may be that they had some of the quick switch knuckles that had a shank that slid into the link pocket and was secured with the coupler pin- I recall seeing something like that in N&SV and/or Tuscarora Valley pics from PA. For locomotives puttering around Sonsonate switching cars that had either knuckles or link & pin, some accommodation to handle both without a fifteen minute equipment change or compromise car would be preferable.
The construct atop #5 looks a lot more like some sort of a tank than the similarly placed contraption in the original photo of #9 I posted to start the thread.
