Front knuckle coupler?

Based on the photos I got in the 1970's the original FES engines had link and pin pilot couplers right up to the end. Only the former IRCA engines had front knuckle couplers. But the more interesting issue remains, what the heck were those things on top of the boiler. The pix of the five are better than what I saw posted previously but the function still is not obvious, at least to me.
