12 and 13 were the biggest of the 4-6-0s, followed by 6-8 that were 15 years or so older and a bit under two tons lighter, if I remember correctly. 12 and 13 were also the only FES original purchase locos to have the piston valve conversion heads with outside admission steam feed installed, either at Baldwin or later by FES.
Another thing I’ve been curious about: FES bought the four big OR&L Alco consolidations, 250 box cars, a bunch of good rail and several hundred tons of “spare parts” and had them shipped from Honolulu to Acajutla in 1950. I’ve often wondered what the trove of spares consisted of and just how much OR&L we see in post 1950 FES photos? Electric headlights, newer bigger air pumps and generators?
Maybe the piston valve conversion heads were obtained by OR&L to upgrade an engine or two but they never got around to it before folding and they passed to FES with the stores they bought?
