As I recall, the C&S untook the systematic rebuilding of a whole wad of the 2-6-0's right after the turn of the century. No.9 was only one of many that got hauled in for a major. It had nothing to do with any mishap. They got new size drivers, as well as new boilers and drive gear. In fact, very little remained of the old Cooke after 1902.
