Gentlemen, Please do research and not just make blabber on this discussion list. But at least some are thinking of how to match things up.
What is the average and maxium speed a of today's train Chama to Cumbres? It is in the range of the Shay's operating speed.
West Side Lumber Shay #12 (Swayne Lbr #6) had the same tractive effort as NML #7 (#3345) which was 25,380 #. If anyone read the RGS Story Volume VII on page 391, you could see a letter dated at Ridgway 8/20/1930 talking of the plans to use NML #7 as pusher on stock train on Dallas Divide grade. The engine will haul 300 tons on 4% and 400 tons on 3% at 10 mph.
The tractive effort of The K-27 #463 is 27,000#. Is it true that the #463 was rated at one less car than the K-36 on Cumbres? Therefor, I stand at my claim that the Shay #12 will climb Cumbres with the train of the size used for #463, but will take 72 minutes instead of 60 minutes.
A extra 12 minutes in that part of the schedule will not hurt any present schedule if the Shay could be traded off for any rod engine for the level running.
A Shay is built to use it full power of steaming capacity under 12 mph, where the rod engine is better at twice that speed.
