We will now follow the 6 mile Sequoia Railroad grade from the bottom of the hoist to Millwood. The three foot gauge line used two 2 truck shays. Log cars were lowered from the hoist in groups of three and then the locomotive would take six to twelve of them down to Millwood where a flume would then send the lumber to Sanger.
Here's a few shots of the right of way (looking downgrade towards Millwood):
A large cut. Just beyond this was a trestle site. I wanted to take a then and now photo of the trestle, but there was a couple "picnicking" in the shade and I didn't want to interrupt their amorous adventure...
Another large cut about a mile further downgrade.
Standing in the same location, you can see the right of way following the hillside. This entire area was heavily burned in the Rough Fire of 2015.
At the same location was this long bolt...
Here's a view of a logging train crossing one of the many trestles enroute to Millwood (Photo courtesy of Ed Bryant's photo album):
Like many Sierra Nevada logging railways, the Sequoia Railroad apparently had no caboose. Crew (and passengers) rode the lumber loads.
Next stop: Millwood
