Yesterday, I did a day trip with a friend to Converse Basin outside Kings Canyon National Park. I wanted to check out some of the structures left in the woods as well as follow the Sequoia Railroad grade from the bottom of Hoist Ridge down to Millwood.
Here's a overall map drawn by Donal DeVere and found in Hank Johnston's They Felled The Redwoods:
We will start our journey at the mill site in Converse Basin and work our way towards Millwood.
Here's a view from Hank Johnston's The Whistles Blow No More. It was taken sometime after 1906. We're looking south towards the Converse Mill and the beginning of the hoist:
Here's approximately the same location taken yesterday, September 26, 2022:
The mill was elevated above the ground (probably to avoid the many redwood stumps), thus there is little to indicate it once existed.
Next we will head up the route of the hoist and see what we can find in the woods nearby...
