Uintah Railway engine #????

July 17, 2004 11:11PM
Every summer I fend off at least one well meaning community member who calls to tell me the most remarkable news......... a Uintah engine has just been uncovered on Baxter Pass, buried in the fill of a county road, just this last weekend by a gas Pipe line crew........... "You'd better hurrey up and go see it before they fill it back in".......
It never ceases to amaze me that twenty years ago a gas pipe line crew, did in fact uncover a large boiler on the Uintah's old right of way. They scraped and clawed at it and pulled it from the fill , where it had been used as a large culvert. They left it laying in the sagebrush, where it lies to this day, most likely, either a locomotive boiler that was changed out or a stationary boiler for the plant at Atchee. Nothing more than a large round cylinder with rivets going through in places, three miles south of Atchee. But by the time the story comes back around, the wheels are still on her, and the bell just needs polished !!!
