ISTR that C&S tried for months to give away #6 (B-3-C) for display in 1938-39 and got no takers.
There was a drive in Durango at one point in the early 1950'[s to get rid of #315 'cause it was "ugly". Montrose almost backed out of putting #278 up, according to the NGN. Quite a few other engines that had been put on display were eventually scrapped for similar reasons.
Oh and Al Perleman was much the same wrt steam engines after he went to NYC, he's credited with the dearth of NYC steam too. But hey, a lot of people felt that way back then and some still do.
