Supposedly the man was obsessed about corporate image in an era when anything new was good and forward-looking and anything old was backwards and worthless and subject to ridicule. If so it backfired in spectacular fashion since the D&RGW is remembered today almost solely due to its narrow gauge steam-era heritage.
On the other hand, if I try to be fair to an infamous villain of the steam enthusiast community.....I ain't shedding any tears or losing any sleep over the legions of SD-40's and the like that are presently undergoing the same fate.
