Slightly off topic, but what was the point of scrapping the few remaining NG locomotives after WWII? Many of them that were still around at that time got saved, and I am sure there would have been interest in the remainder (as was the rumor mentioned in this thread). They are not excessively big, so transport by truck is possible. I can't imagine the scrap price of the steel for just a few locomotives would have made much difference to the railroad, and the steel was not needed for the war effort. I find it a little curious that more towns in that area (Montrose, Ridgway, Dolores, Telluride, etc) didn't wind up with a "park locomotive". Was there an incentive to scrap rather than donate?
