p.s. IIRC, a "rattler" is a freight consisting entirely or at least mostly of empties, which rattle and bang a lot more than loaded cars.
pps. Both John West and I were lucky enough to ride the original Toltec Rattler, SFAIK the C&TS very first 'Photo Freight' operated for railfans, on October 22, 1972.* John's photos of the Rattler are scattered among his fabulous collection at [
chasingtrains.smugmug.com], so I'm hoping Scott's announcement of a 50th Anniversary Commemoration will inspire him to scan several more from 10/22/72 and gather them into a mini-gallery similar to his
'Mad Dash' collection. Meanwhile, my own photos from that beautiful day can be found at [

et seq.
* Although run primarily for the benefit and enjoyment of photographers, neither the original 'Toltec Rattler' nor the 'Rattler Redux' should be considered a true Phraud-O-Phreight™. The lettering on the tenders was / will be the small "CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD" with C&TS logo per Ernie Robart's original stencils, and the 1972 train was run as a double-header rather than with the helper cut in ahead of the caboose as was usually done with Cumbres Turns in the
Rio Grande days
; the Rattler Redux will make use of only a single engine to keep costs – and ticket prices – to a minimum.
