IMHO, there's nothing wrong with either the lighting or your choice of spots in the line. The only change I would suggest is to add a blank line between the attachments on your post so that the photos are separated from one another.
It looks to me like that first shot is a long telephoto of the shallow s-curve around m.p. 295.5, as seen here from
the ridge above a photo line along the top level of The Whiplash about a dozen years ago when D&RG #425 was posing as D&RGW #315
:
Note the tall tree on the north side of the track in both our photos. The compression effect of telephoto makes the curves look a lot sharper than they really are — Ernie's map shows the middle leg is only about 45° off from the direction of the track before and after.
