Yes there definitely were runs from Chama to Cumbers with mid-train helpers. Thats one of the reasons I wanted to do that, and to be different from what Craft did the previous fall. His trips were the first such trips to run (a) rear pushers up Cumbres, and (b) Mid-train helper out of Antonito, since the D&RGW days I believe. Same for the 3 engine train with 2 up front and rear helper. To this day those were some of the best trips, and every day was gorgeous weather. One of my jobs as assistant was to drive to Santa Fe one day to get supplies for the last weekend. This was on Wednesday I believe while the other guys were off shooting on the D&S. We loaded up the mini-van with drinks, food, snacks, and all sorts of stuff. I think we had 4 carts at this grocery John told me to go to. The folks working there asked if we were having a big party!!!! I guess it was a steam party!
