Well, being one of those newbie railfan photographers (with a few years of putzing at it, now), I'd just recommend the regular eastbound out of Chama. Thing is, the photo gem occurs before the train leaves, early in the morning as the locomotive(s) waddle through the yard doing their pre-run servicing. Especially in the autumn, when the air is cold - the steam exhaust from the cylinders at the start of movement makes for some really nice scenes. Then, the train ride is really more a reconnaissance mission; a few photo opportunities, but really more a way to scout out the good locations to which to return. Plus, if with family/friends, this is the part of the trip to the middle of nowhere that they came for...
I've done this about 4 or 5 times now; travel to Chama the day before, stay in a hotel on Terrace near the railroad, then wake up at o-dark-thirty and walk down to the yard even before the shop folk start the morning preparations. Here's some of what I've captured:
Relatively low cost, huge impact...
