Good point and you are right that most (if not all) government-spec locos made before the Armistice by Baldwin had that paint. This is well documented.
But the issue here that has been well pointed out is that these Davenports were being made
after the war was over. This was a real state of transition as by late 1918, OD green was a very common color as paint jobs were
heavily leaning toward the camouflage ideal by then.
Grey locos being seen from across no man's land by German forces, well, that wouldn't have been such a great idea.
Before all this was made clear to me, I also would have assumed that all the trench locos were grey. The Baldwin ones clearly were. It's well documented.
But this
isn't a Baldwin loco. I'm thankful for those who patiently supported what color these appear to have been painted.
