Re: 480 and 488 coming from Durango on January 30, 1964

Unbeknownst to me, fellow New Mexico State University engineering student Tom Koglin also headed for the narrow gauge during semester break in January, 1964. For several months in early 1964 he had the use of a friend's blue 1955 Chevy. Had I known about his narrow gauge plans, I could have had a much less adventurous trip over semester break. While I was leaving my broom closet overnight acomodations at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe and heading north to Chama on the bus, Tom was intercepting 480 and 488 with the eastbound freight a few miles west of Gato on Thursday, January 30, 1964.

Here are 480 and 488 some miles west of Gato with a heavy freight



Just west of the bridge at Gato, 480 and 488 have uncoupled their train and are moving ahead to the Gato tank





The engines have taken on water, picked up a flat car of equipment, and are backing to their train



480 and 488 are starting to pull ahead with their and heading for Chama
